Larry Shapiro photo The Daily Herald reported that a 20-year-old man is being held responsible for igniting a massive brush fire in Buffalo Grove that put several homes at risk and caused widespread power outages. A 20-year-old resident of Buffalo Grove is accused of starting a fast-moving brush fire that created a towering wall of flames, threatening dozens of homes on Sunday afternoon. Firefighters from over 20 departments joined the effort to contain the blaze, which spread to multiple power lines and burned through 30 acres of dry vegetation, according to officials. The fire, fueled by dry conditions, destroyed utility poles and ignited power lines, leaving about 2,400 ComEd customers without electricity. An off-duty officer from Morton Grove noticed four individuals fleeing the scene and managed to stop them before Buffalo Grove police arrived. Authorities say the group was using illegal fireworks, which led to the fire. Gabriel R. Horwich, 20, was arrested and charged with criminal damage to property by reckless means of fire—a felony that could result in up to three years in prison. “We were very lucky no one was hurt and no homes were damaged,†said Kristiansen. “The fire department did an exceptional job.†ComEd restored power to nearly all affected homes by Sunday night, but the fire caused around $150,000 in damages to the infrastructure, according to Kristiansen. Police noted that the other three individuals with Horwich had not been charged as of Sunday night, but the investigation was still ongoing.
